5/18/13 at the Oakland Coliseum- BallhawkFest: Bay Area: 2013!

Today was going to be a long, fun filled day!

Do you remember back in March when I mentioned BallhawkFest: West Coast? Well shortly after, it was approved by Alan Schuster, the Admin at MyGameBalls.com, and it was all set to go, on May 18th in Oakland, for the A’s to take on the Royals.

There was A LOT of planning involved on my part, finalizing details and other such things…

ANYWAY… My family left for Zachary’s Pizza in Oakland around noon, getting there around 12:40. Spencer Sanborn, Dave Edlund, and Kelly Byrnes and his wife Leah were already there.

We were soon seated and shortly after, Rick Gold showed up. Today was looking to be a good day!

We all finished up around 2:20, where we grabbed a quick group picture before heading out.

IMG_4033

Starting with me going clockwise: Me, Dave Edlund, My Mom (Anne), My Sister (Pascale), Leah Byrnes, Kelly Byrnes, Spencer Sanborn, and Rick Gold.

From there, we parted ways and headed off to the Coliseum. I was the first one there and arrived around 2:40, where it was near empty, but PERFECT weather. I was a little excited!

IMG_4047

This was the scene when I got to Gate MM. As you can see, only the flags were laid out and there was nobody else there!

IMG_4048

After walking around the stadium once, I headed out to the parking lot to meet up with Kelly Byrnes. He and I are both participating in the MyGameBalls.com Photo Scavenger Hunt this season, with one of the items on the checklist being “You swinging a bat at the BallhawkFest softball game.” Both of us were disappointed because nobody else wanted to play, so we decided to play a HR Derby-Style Wiffle Ball game in the EMPTY parking lot.

I was first up and the first to pitches I hit were both at one of the few cars in the parking lot…

I kept pulling the ball!!

We shifted our angle, and that’s where the fun began!

IMG_4052

I would say my farthest hit went 200 feet maybe. Then, it was his turn to bat.

IMG_4060

I felt bad because my pitches were not in the strike zone much.

IMG_4061

But when they were, he got ahold of them!

IMG_4062

Based solely on most hits, I won. If I had given him enough good pitches, he would have won in a landslide!

Once we finished up, he was very kind in giving me one of his blog’s shirts, we chatted for a bit, then parted ways.

I headed up back to Gate MM, where I saw Dave Edlund and his friend “Splash Hit” Steve Garrison in line at Gate LL, so I walked over there to talk with him.

20130522-235855.jpg

Soon after, Leiming Tang, or Tang, as he is better known, showed up!

We talked for 20 minutes or so, before I headed to get back in line at MM.

Dave and Steve tossed and bounced a ball around for a bit.

IMG_4064

They also played a bit of catch.

20130522-235905.jpg

20130522-235915.jpg

But I was in line! Kelly and Leah joined my dad and I in line, where we were soon joined by Will, Ross, Santiago, and a few others.

20130522-235921.jpg

10 minutes before the gates opened, Ben and Vanessa showed up and Ben had an AMAZING hat for Will.

IMG_4068

You know how the Brewers had the Design the YOU-niform contest

IMG_4069

Around 4pm, I was all ready to go!
IMG_4070

BUT THEY WOUDNT LET US IN because it wasn’t 4:05…

When I did finally run inside, Seth Smith was hitting in the cages.

IMG_4074

So was Nate Freiman

IMG_4096

Dave headed to left field. He’s in the blue.

To his right is Ryan Dalton, one of the ballhawks that joined us for BallhawkFest!

IMG_4072

To his right is Rick Gold!

IMG_4092

Rick Gold, as I am sure most of you know, ballhawked at the Coliseum in the 1990’s. He actually competed with Ryan’s dad, who was also a ballhawk for balls during that time!

It’s a small world, huh?

I started out the day near my seat in Right Field, where two ball boys were patrolling the area, tossing back everything to the infield.
IMG_4100

Within 10 minutes of no baseballs, the Royals came onto the field.

IMG_4108

Then, a ball was hit off the wall, landing in the grass.

IMG_4111

Jerry Blevins walked off, picked it up, and tossed it to a random guy a few feet away from me.

The ball boys were throwing EVERYTHING back to the infield.

IMG_4119

Kelly had headed over to one of my usual spots, over down the RF line.

IMG_4142

My dad got a lot of cool pictures during BP.

IMG_4144

IMG_4151

Once their stretching had concluded, the Royals players began to play catch and warm up.
IMG_4188

One of the players out there was Mr. Bacon Friday himself, Jeff Francouer!

IMG_4239

Around 15 minutes into BP, a ball was hit off the wall right above where my dad was standing. A player walked over, tossed it up, and…

IMG_4128

My dad snagged his 2nd lifetime ball!

I have to give major props to Dave and Steve for this game. They rarely go to games INSIDE the stadium, and both of them rarely go to the Oakland Colisuem, so as Spencer said, it’s like “They are fish out of water.”

IMG_4174

Rick had a successful BP himself.

IMG_4521A few minutes after my dad got his ball, a player on the A’s hit a ball off the wall that A.J. Griffin fielded, then tossed up to me.

20130522-235928.jpg

Once I got this ball, I headed over to the RF line, near where Kelly was.

IMG_4434

Shortly after I got over there, his wife Leah hot a ball tossed up to her. It was her first lifetime ball!

IMG_4550

She ended up giving it away to a kid nearby her.

I didn’t see it, but about halfway though batting practice, if I am not mistaken, a ball was hit Dave’s way. In the following picture, you can see the ball in his hands.

IMG_4591

My dad got a lot of great pictures from the bleachers, despite being crowded in.

IMG_4270

IMG_4413

IMG_4426

The pitchers did a lot of running durin BP.

IMG_4454

IMG_4465

BP was pretty quiet in regards to hit balls, so I had a lot of time to stand around.

IMG_4492

It AMAZED me how many toss-ups there were. JC Gutierrez tossed up at least 10 balls to the RF Bleachers.

IMG_4573

Why was I not there? The area in which he was tossing them up was packed. Bruce Chen and Luis Mendoza also had their fair share of toss-ups.

IMG_4633

Can you spot the ball that Luis Mendoza is tossing up? Let me know in the comments!
IMG_4812

Royals coaches were getting in on the act.

IMG_4844

Bruce Chen tossed more balls into the stands…IMG_4894

Some time after that, Jeff Francouer lined a ball foul that if I remember correctly either was bobbled by some fans or hit a seat.

IMG_4749

Long story short, Kelly came up with it!
IMG_4702

Doy you see the kid in the black A’s hat and grey shirt, to the left of Kelly? Well, when I headed over to the RF foul pole, where  a ball had just been hit, the boys called out to the trainer, asking for a ball. He didn’t have one, telling them all he had was water. So, that boy and his friend asked for a bottle of water!

20130522-235935.jpg

Remember that kid and his friend, ok?

Around 5:50, Jeff Francouer hit a sharp ground ball just foul. It ended up landing here.

20130522-235940.jpgBruce Chen went over to pick it up, in the process accidentally kicking it towards the RF corner, as you can see it is in a different location in the next photo.

I called out to him.

IMG_4710

And he flipped it up!

IMG_4711

Can you spot the ball? Let me know in the comments!

IMG_4712

It’s easier to see in this photo.

IMG_4716

Since my dad and I usually don’t touch base much during Batting Practice, I thought it was cool that he got a series of photos like this.IMG_4720

Dave was easy to spot in LF, wearing his royal blue BallhawkFest shirt among a sea of green and gold.

IMG_5010

Shortly after I got that ball, once Chen had gotten back to his spot in the outfield, a ball was hit to him. The other of those two boys I mentioned earlier, asked if he could play catch with him.

STORY TIME!!! I had seen this video filmed by ballhawk Bobby Crosby, who films videos of himself snagging balls on the YouTube channel DodgerFilms. The video is of Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu playing catch with a young fan during Dodgers BP, and since it was posted on May 13th, has over 2 Millions Views! 3 days later, the same boy was back at Dodger BP again and AGAIN played catch with Hyun-Jin Ryu. That is really where it started. Zack Hample has done it not one, two, or three, but four times on video. Mateo Fischer has played catch with Derek Lowe. The day after the first video of Hyrun-Jin Ryu came out, there was a video of Gio Gonzalez doing them same thing.

As soon as I saw this taking place, I pulled out my cell phone and recorded this video:

My dad took notice and also got a short video as well. I edited his video and my video together to make this:

Hands down, that was one of the highlights of the day for me!

As soon as I finished recording the video on my phone, I immediately went to upload it to YouTube. It finished around 7pm, and I then tweeted it to Alex Espinosa.

Screen Shot 2013-05-23 at 1.18.59 AM

He is the MLB.com Cut4 Real Time Correspondant for Oakland, and I’m sure most of you remember him from past entries.

Later that night, I found my video on Cut4, in this article:

Untitled-1

Then, I saw this tweet from the MLB Fan Cave:

Screen Shot 2013-05-23 at 1.28.10 AM

I replied to the Tweet, then they replied to my tweet!Screen Shot 2013-05-23 at 1.28.28 AM

There were multiple blog posts written about it at the MLB Fan Cave website. The MLB Fan Cave posted a quick entry with my video, Mateo’s video, the Hyun-Jin Ryu video, and the Gio Gonzalez video. Then, Cave Dweller April Whitzman did a post herself.

Untitled-3

On Monday, I walked into Mr. Hahn’s class and told him about the experience and video. He then told me he had read an article on Yahoo over the weekend about players playing catch with kids during BP. On Monday May 20th, it was the top headline at Yahoo sports! He showed me the article and lone behold…

Untitled-2

Wow! I did not expect all of this attention at all!

Here is a picture my dad snapped of him lying on the outfield grass

IMG_4897

I would say that in total, at least 30 balls were tossed up, if not closer to 40, mostly due to these two guys.

IMG_5015

IMG_5012

Once BP came to a close, I had finished with two balls. All of the ballhawks met up in the concourse behind the bleachers for a group photo.

IMG_5078

Top Row: Spencer Sanborn (3 Balls), Ryan Dalton (3 Balls), Kelly Byrnes (2 Balls), Rick Gold (4 Balls)

Bottom Row: “McCovey Cove” Dave Edlund (1 Ball), Nick Badders (2 Balls + My Dad’s 1 Ball), “Splash Hit” Steve Garrison (1 Ball)

Not Pictured: Dan Badders (1 Ball held by Nick Badders), Leah Byrnes (2 Balls- Gave Both Away), Leiming Tang (3 Balls)

So, between the 9 of us, 22 balls were snagged! Even though that is only an average of 2.44 balls per person, it is still crazy for me to see that it all came together and was successful!

After we got that group picture, I also got a picture with Rick, who has snagged the most lifetime balls at the Oakland Coliseum. This picture gave me 2 points in the MyGameBalls Photo Scavenger Hunt.
IMG_5080

Kelly was in the picture, as he is also competing in the contest!

Between our two families, 5 balls had been snagged, so we both wanted to get a picture for the scavenger hunt. For 6 points… “You and another myGameBalls.com member standing in an empty row of seats in which each cupholder contains a baseball.”

IMG_5084

IMG_5088

Mission accomplished!

We then parted our separate ways for a little while. My dad and I headed back to our seats.

After a little while with no action, Ervin Santana, the Royals starting pitcher for the day came out to warm up.

IMG_5094

I can’t identify the player stretching in this photo.
IMG_5097

The grounds crew watered the infield dirt.

IMG_5141

Then, I noticed this guy!
IMG_5226

Omar Gonzlez wore his graduation robe, as he has just finished his undergrad studies in college! Why don’t you all, as the readers of 7000 Coliseum Way, go over and give him some love on Twitter. Sound good? Cool!

Back to the warming up?

IMG_5241

It was “Star Trek Night,” so the A’s had all of these gimmicks going on, including Stomper’s “outfit.”

IMG_5264

IMG_5285

This was the only A’s logo shown on the scoreboard that day…

IMG_5472

Yep!

Jeff Francoeur WAS getting the start in Right Field today!

IMG_5312

“Tommy Gun” Milone was on the mound for the A’s in this game, my dad got a few pictures of him in the bullpen before the game got underway.
IMG_5388

IMG_5390

Ervin Santana warmed up in the Royals bullpen.

IMG_5420

IMG_5421

IMG_5423

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown!

IMG_5481

The national anthem was played!

IMG_5492

IMG_5516

The people in the bullpen finished up their work.

IMG_5524

The meeting at home plate took place.

IMG_5559

And we were all ready to go!

IMG_5563

Chris Young was in Right Field for the A’s.

IMG_5606

Eric Sogard was in his usual second base position.

IMG_5658

It wasn’t too hard to spot Dave and Steve in LF. Can you?

IMG_5665

Coco Crisp lead off in the bottom of the 1st for Oakland.

IMG_5754

Yoenis Cespedes lined out to RF to end the inning.

IMG_5836

Tommy Milone took the mound in the second, down 1-0, after giving up a first inning run.

IMG_5869

I thought this was a randomly cool picture.

IMG_5878

Along with this one…

IMG_5992

And this one…

IMG_6020

Lorenzo Cain was called out on strikes to end the second inning.

IMG_6066

However, the 2nd inning didn’t come without a cost. *38* pitches in the 2nd inning for Tomaso, with 26 pitches in the top of the first inning, prompting Jesse Chavez to start to get hot.

IMG_6080

Early into the game, the A’s will show the Pepsi Sports highlight during an inning break. It’s always MLB Action or something random.

IMG_6118

Nobody ever wants to see MLB Action.

Like I mentioned earlier, Jeff Francoeur was in RF for KC.

IMG_6126

The ball boy down the RF line tossed a lot of foul balls into the stands.

IMG_6134

IMG_6135

John Jaso was the 2nd out of the 2nd inning, striking out.

IMG_6159

Milone was back out for the 3rd inning, this time, with 12 pitches.
IMG_6229

My dad enjoyed using the extension on his monopod to get photos like this.

IMG_6245In the top of the 4th inning, Frenchy struck out swinging for the 2nd out.
IMG_6303

This day was Social Media night, which my mom and sister particpated in. They each bought a ticket to the “Tweetup,” where they also got a special ticket in a section with all of the other tweeters. I used the zoom on my dad’s camera to find them quickly.

IMG_6327

In the bottom of the 4th, Josh Donaldson took a mighty hack, but…

IMG_6361

Popped out to end the inning, with the score still at 1-0 Royals.

IMG_6366

Over the course of the day, we got lots of pictures of Section 149. I love Tony’s pose here.
IMG_6374

After his first few wild inning, Tommy Milone settled down A LOT!

IMG_6391

Chris Young was starting to get the hang of keeping track of outs with the RF Crew. He’s not 100% there yet, though.

IMG_6414

Alcides Escobar at the plate…

IMG_6426

Brandon Moss was at his usual first base spot in this game.

IMG_6435

I thought this was another really cool photo. (I took it! ;-))

IMG_6443

4 of the guys on my school’s Varsity baseball team: Ryan Flayler, Jordan Thrailkill, Justin Cash, and Dan Whitney, told me that they were going to be at this game, sitting fright behind the dugout. Guess who I found using my dad’s extreme zoom?

IMG_6506

In the 6th inning, Jed Lowrie hit a sac fly with no outs to bring in the game tying run.

WE LOVE YOU OAKLAND, WE DO! WE LOVE YOU OAKLAND, WE DO! WE LOVE YOU OAKLAND, OAKLAND WE LOVE YOU!

IMG_6534

Then, Brandon Moss tripled in Coco Crisp to put the A’s ahead 2-1.

IMG_6547

High fives all around!IMG_6549

It was around this time that I attempted to create my own panoramic shot. I took 4 pictures, Photoshopped them together, and BAM!

panorma

In the 8th inning, my dad and mom headed up to where she and my sister had been sitting. Pascale stayed with me in RF, my dad took the camera and loved getting pictures from a different angle.

IMG_6583

This was their view.

IMG_6613

And no, they did not have any foul balls come close.

In the top of the 8th, Sean Doolittle came in to pitch.
IMG_6644

IMG_6654

He pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning.IMG_6674

Coco Crisp was called out on strikes to lead off the A’s half of the 8th inning.

IMG_6714

Jed Lowrie flied out to center field.

IMG_6729
Like I mentioned earlier, my sister and I were sitting in RF. Kelly is to her right, to his right is his wife Leah.

IMG_6731

I thought it was awesome to see RF from this angle.

IMG_6739

Guess who pitched the 9th inning for the A’s? It was 2-1. They were winning…

IMG_6786

(In case you are wondering, yes, my parents came back to the bleachers at the start of the 9th, to join Pascale and I)
IMG_6792

Despite a leadoff walk, Balfour got none other than Jeff Francoeur to fly out…
IMG_6818

To end the game!

IMG_6820

IMG_6822

And it was the A’s 2nd consecutive 2-1 win!

Immediately after the final out, these people came onto the field…

IMG_6825

And my family got in line along with Kelly and Leah to get onto the field to watch the fireworks.

IMG_6831

It was PACKED!!

IMG_6834

My sister and I were both happy to be there.

IMG_6849

The fireworks were spectacular, as always.

IMG_6860

IMG_6867

My dad and I got a picture with our BP balls.

IMG_6872

I got one last picture. I’m sure you can notice how tired I am.

4/1/13 at the Oakland Coliseum

This was shaping up to be a VERY fun day! Everyone in my family got Opening Day tickets on Christmas, and we were sitting in the bleachers and I COULD NOT be more excited! The four of us left our house around 1:45 and got to Oakland close to 2:20.

IMG_5326

It was a beautiful day and there were LOTS of fans already there!

When we were parked, I first walked around the perimeter to see if I could find someone with information about whether or not Gate B would be open. Eventually, I found someone, and he confirmed that indeed, Gate B would be open.

I then went back to our car, grabbed my sister, and we walked around the Coliseum again, where she snapped this picture of me.

We stopped in the team store for a bit before heading back to the car. At this point, it was 2:40 and I wanted to start prepping for my BlogTalkRadio show at 3:00. Unfortunately  I decided at the last minute to do it, and due to a lack of WiFi at the Coliseum, I was unable to publicize it, but thanks to Quinn for doing so! If you didn’t listen to the show, just click here.

At 3:25, I wrapped the show up and jumped back in line, where I found bleacher friends Ross (RF Bleacher Shirt) and Ralliney (Just out of the frame on the right)!

IMG_5330

My dad then noticed this scaffolding… RANDOM!

IMG_5335

But the four of us waiting in line got a quick picture together.

IMG_5345

Then we got a quick picture of me, my dad, and my sister. AWWWWWWW!

IMG_5347

It was seriously a beautiful day for baseball.

IMG_5349

I then remembered that I needed to get a photo checked off the 2013 MyGameBalls.com Photo Scavenger Hunt list. Attempting to juggle 3 baseballs while in line waiting for the gates to open. Check!

IMG_5380

No I can’t juggle. At least I made te effort!

More and more people started gathering in line and got pictures together.

IMG_5464

Fast forward to 5 minutes before the gates open. This is the scene. It was INSANELY PACKED. Everyone was all ready to go in.

IMG_5485

Then look who showed up! It’s Benjamin Christensen! He was one of the 9 Cave Dwellers for the MLB Fan Cave last year. Go hit him up on Twitter or check out his hat of the day blog. Good stuff!

IMG_5500

But like I said, the line was PACKED

IMG_5501

And LONG

IMG_5503

When they let us in at 5:07, I was running in and slipped on a gatorade wrapper on the ground on my first step. GREAT!!!!

Then, when I was the 3rd person in at the turnstile, the person ahead of me wouldn’t take his ticket out of his ticket lanyard, so that resulted in being held up. Once I finally got past that and the giveaways, there was a line to get WRISTBANDED going into the bleachers. Wristbands suck. You have to get a wristband when entering the bleachers if they are sold out. Well I finally got in!

IMG_5533

And Derek Norris was in the cages.

IMG_5573

He wasn’t hitting anything to right field. After him, Nate Freiman was hitting in the cage.

IMG_5580

A’s BP was going nowhere fast, so I headed down to where the Mariners were playing catch. Oliver Perez was throwing…

IMG_5585

IMG_5668

… With this guy!

IMG_5615

I recognized this guy sitting near me during the game.

IMG_5700

That is Tommy Bentley, who was one of the Top 52 MLB Fan Cave Dwellers. You can follow him on Twitter here.

Towards the end of his time throwing, Perez began throwing submarine.

IMG_5707

And the Mariners began taking BP.

Kendrys Morales was hitting the ball pretty far, but he wasn’t hitting it out. Lots of balls off the wall.

IMG_5716

I decided it was best not to be in the bleachers for BP. Why?

IMG_5809

It was crowded. And there were at least a few people in every row, making moving around VERY hard. It was like that in every section of the Bleachers in LF AND RF.

It was a shame how packed the bleachers because Michael Morse was hitting BOMBS!

IMG_5814

He hit a few 2nd Deckers in Center Field. He hit A LOT of home runs into the LF Bleachers as well. Nothing to RF. But, like I said, it was way too crowded to even have a chance.

IMG_5955

You see those 3 guys? They must have thrown at least 10 balls into the bleachers if not more. Every time they threw a ball, it was a mad scrum to get it. Ridiculous.

Third Base coach Jeff Datz was throwing BP.

IMG_5961

Around 5:40, there was a batter who I couldn’t identify that hit 5 or 6 balls in a row on the ground that were all right in front of me. Bullpen catcher Jaime Navarro walked over and without me asking, seeing as that I was wearing Mariners gear, he tossed me a ball!IMG_6080

My dad wandered around for BP, taking a lot of cool photos. It honestly felt like there were easily 15,000 people in the stadium taking in BP.

IMG_5971

And for those of you that have wondered, this is what it looks like from above, looking into the Diamond Level seats in Oakland.

IMG_5991

But, like I said, he got a lot of cool photos during BP like this one:

IMG_6029

All told, BP was pretty calm. Other than Morse, there were few home runs hit. There were lot a lot of pull lefties either. Balls that were hit near me on the field were all tossed in. There was a ball that I called out for, but right before it was tossed to me, I noticed a little boy standing behind me and I moved out of the way so he could get it.

Once BP was over,I headed back to the Bleachers.

IMG_6071

Where they were setting these things. That meant one thing… FIREWORKS!!!!

IMG_6084

I then noticed this in Left Field. Hm…

IMG_6088

My dad then headed off to get some food for my sister and I.

Helpful Hint: If you are ever in need of good-tasting (However EXTREMELY overpriced food), go to the Westside Club. They have THE BEST Pizza-By-The-Slice! There is also a Sandwich bar that I mentioned in entries like this one.

The A’s started coming onto the field and I pulled out my dad’s camera when I noticed this…

IMG_6097

Do you know what is so special? For 5 points on the 2013 MyGameBalls.com Photo Scavenger Hunt list, you need a picture of… “At least three players standing in a group whose jersey numbers are visible and satisfy this mathematical formula: one player’s number equals the sum of the other players’ numbers.”

YES! 5 points checked off! 7 Points so far on the day! The I noticed this…

IMG_6098

What is so special?

For 6 points on the 2013 MyGameBalls.com Photo Scavenger Hunt list is of… “Two players standing together whose jersey numbers are visible and satisfy this mathematical formula: one player’s number equals the square root of the other player’s number.”

2+5+6 = 13 Points on the Day!

Yoenis Cespedes was also stretching on the field.

IMG_6099

So were the Mariners!

IMG_6110

“King” Felix Hernandez was pitching for the Mariners.

IMG_6114

Around 6:40, the pregame ceremonies got underway! The Bleachers were PACKED and READY TO GOOOOOOO!

IMG_6112

IMG_6148

The Mariners were introduced and stuff, then the A’s were introduced! The A’s were really focused on the fan interaction this day, so they chose 10-15 of their longest season ticket holders to greet the players on their way onto the field!

IMG_6173

Remember that photo of the tarp over the outfield wall? Well they chose two more season ticket holders to pull it off and reveal this!

IMG_6198

It was so cool to see the entire team lined up along the field!

IMG_6202

The use of Pyro was really great in the pre-game ceremonies!

IMG_6203

IMG_6210

RF Drummer, Andy, was gettting into it! (His Twitter is here)

IMG_6246

Felix finished his warm-up tosses.

IMG_6290

And the boys in Green and Gold took the field!

Josh Reddick, of course was the A’s starting pitcher.

IMG_6326

IMG_6345

THAT BEARD!!!

I really like this next picture of him. I think it just looks really cool!

IMG_6346

Coco Crisp, of course, was the A’s starting Center Fielder.

IMG_6350

And the game was UNDERWAY!!

IMG_6355

Like Game 3 of the ALDS, the starting pitcher was Brett Anderson.

IMG_6371

IMG_6374

He was pitching VERY well.

One of my favorite A’s players, Eric Sogard, was the A’s starting second baseman. If you remember, I got my picture with him at 2012 FanFest! NERD POWER!!!!

IMG_6398

John Jaso, the A’s starting catcher doubled for the A’s first hit of the game, which game with 1 out in the 4th inning.

IMG_6402

Michael Saunders was the Mariners starting right fielder. Poor guy. If you don’t know why I say that, I’ll leave it at the fact that visiting right fielders WILL get heckled in Oakland.

IMG_6426

The TV Booth was popping as always, with Ray Fosse and Glen Kuiper.

IMG_6434

Felix Hernandez was DEALING

IMG_6440

He allowed 3 hits all game. No Walks. 8 Strikeouts. Yikes…

I got this picture in the 7th inning. No real reason. Just thought it was cool.

IMG_6447

Then, in the 8th inning, guess who stopped by?

IMG_6454

It’s Oakland mayor Jean Quan! If you have heard anything about Occupy: Oakland, then I’m sure you know about her. IF not, just click her name right ^^here^^ to read about her on Wikipedia.

IMG_6458

In the bottom of the 9th, the A’s were down 2-0. But the stadium WOULD NOT stay quiet.

IMG_6470

But, with Jed Lowrie in scoring position at 2nd, Brandon Moss popped out to Michael Saunders to end the game. Awesome…

Before we left, I got this picture with my sister and my 1 ball on the day.

IMG_6478

After that picture right before we left, I spent a few minutes taling with 149 Die-Hard Omar G. He is one of the many A’s fans that has given me ENDLESS suport with my blog, so as a small thank you- can you all go follow follow him on Twitter HERE. Everyone go follow him. NOW.

He has two AWESOME sons, nicknamed Super J and the Champ. I HAD TO get a picture with the two of them! I posed with them and the foam Josh Reddick Wrestling Belt that my sister purchased before the gates opened.

IMG_6482

Seriously. Those kids are REALLY awesome!

The lights then started to turn off, so we all slowly filed out. Even though the A’s lost, it was a good day!

Once we got outside, I remembered that I need this picture…

IMG_6484

Why?  “BONUS 1: You with a stadium name sign in the background with you holding a baseball snagged that day at that stadium (1 point per stadium for a max of 30 points)” on the MGB Photo Scavenger Hunt list. 14 Points in the scavenger hunt on the day! That and the photo of me on Intentional Talk from this game, the next morning, this is what I saw at the scavenger hunt page:

Awesome!

Well that’s about all I have from this game. My next game was April 3rd, so I should have that post up tomorrow or the day after that, then a few after my post about the April 3rd game, I should have up and entry about the game I’m going to today (April 5th) at Banner Island Ballpark!

Thanks for reading!

2013 BallhawkFest: West Coast Edition

Who: ALL WEST COAST BALLHAWKS!
What: BallhawkFest 2013: West Coast Edition
Where: Oakland
When: May 18th
Why: Why Not? 🙂

I was talking with a few ballhawks in the Bay Area, and we all expressed intrest in coming together for a day of Ballhawking.

History of BallhawkFest:
In early 2011, Alan Schuster, the Founder/Creater/Admin over at MyGameBalls.com proposed a MyGameBalls.com BallhawkFest. In April 2011, he wrote a quick article about it that you can check out here. At the end of May 2011, he gave another update in regards to a BallhawkFest. There were a lot of ballhawks that showed up for the July 23rd date at Camden Yards, and you can read about it on many blogs, such as Observing Baseball, Cook & Sons’ Baseball Adventures, and The Baseball Collector. From what I understand, it was a very successful day of softball, food, and ballhawking!

In February 2012, Alan worked with Matt Jackson to not only bring back BallhawkFest, but create one for people on the West Coast as well! You can read all about that entry here. BallhawkFest was at PNC Park in 2012, and it was VERY successful. You can read all about it at MyGameBalls.com, Cook & Sons’ Baseball Adventures, or Chasing Baseballs. This event was VERY successful, with a combination of *52* snagged balls between 8 people (4 of those are Cooks)! The West Coast version was scheudled for Saturday, July 28th, 2012 at Angel Stadium. Matt Jackson talked about on his blog in late May, which you can find here, as well as the week before at MyGameBalls.com here. I had been hoping to go, but wasn’t able to make it down to LA due to complications. I’ll be straight up honest: it was a complete bust. I know Matt showed up… but I don’t know if any other ballhawks did, and I feel bad about that. I have to give credit to him, as he worked so hard to put it all together, it was hard to see if not come through.

To sum it all up: A bunch of ballhawks get together to play softball, eat lunch, and ballhawk!

Choosing the Date:
Obviously, AT&T Park is already crowded enough, plus tickets are expensive, so I ruled that out. I wanted to be able to go to a BallhawkFest, and I thought having it at the Oakland Coliseum would be perfect!

I figured that since the Oakland Coliseum opens 2 hours early on Saturday and Sunday compared to 1.5 hours Monday-Friday, I took a look at all of the weekend night games, to ensure that there would be BP, and lots of it!

Of the 4 weekend night games that the A’s have, one of them is a jersey day against the Red Sox, which probably isn’t the best idea. That left me with May 18th, August 17th, and August 31st. I then ruled out the 17th, as it is a Yoenis Cespdes bobblehead day. The other 2 dates were both firework nights, so it was just a matter of choosing a date. I knew that former Oakland ballhawk Rick Gold, would be in town May 18th, so I decided to go with that date!

Organization
In the past, the ballhawks have grouped up at a local baseball field for a HR Derby of some sort before heading over for lunch, then heading over to the game!

I have two different options for Softball and Food…

(1A) I looked at the parks around the Coliseum, and realized that Mosswood park is only 20 minutes away from the Coli! I’ve played pickup softball there before, and it is a great park to play at!Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 3.30.46 PM

(1B) I then realized that one of my family’s favorite pizza restaurants, Zachary’s Chicago Pizza, s only 5 minutes away from the park.Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 3.30.26 PM

(1C) This puts the Oakland Coliseum a 25 minute drive away!
Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 9.53.46 PM

This is a Possible Outline for the day:
12:00-12:30: Arrive at Mosswood Park!
12:30-1:30: Play Softball/Baseball/Home Run Derby!
1:30ish: Head to Pizza!
2:30-2:45: Head to the Coliseum!
3:00ish: Arrive at the Coliseum!
4:05pm: Gates Open!
6:05pm: Game Starts!

(2A) There is a park in a nearby city called Dublin named Emerald Glen Park that houses a fill size baseball field with a grass infield, literally 3 minutes of walking away from a great pizza place.Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 3.25.57 PM

(2B) That restaurant is called Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria.Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 3.25.11 PM

(2C) This puts the Oakland Coliseum a 20 minute drive away!
Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 3.21.38 PM

This is a Possible Outline for the day:
12:00-12:30: Arrive in Dublin!
12:30-1:30: Play Softball/Baseball/Home Run Derby!
1:30ish: Head to Pizza!
2:30ish: Head to the Coliseum!
2:45-3:00: Arrive at the Coliseum!
4:05pm: Gates Open!
6:05pm: Game Starts!

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Here is the deal: I have talked to Alan about it and he has expressed concerns. Obviously, with the complete flop of BallhawkFest: West, last year, he is hesitant to make this MyGameBalls.com official. Even if we can’t get enough people, this will still be “unofficial.”

If you are interested in attending, BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW. It is a fireworks night, so it WILL (Believe it or not) sell out. Once you have purchased tickets, please email me nickbatters@gmail.com. Even if you are slightly interested, email me at that address to keep in contact.  If you have any questions, email me and I will answer them for you.

It is important for me to get a headcount to Alan as soon as possible. Ideally, we are shooting for AT LEAST *10* people. If you have any family, friends, or know of any other people that would like to attend, direct them to this post, them have them email me.

Once I get an official head count, we can work to design shirts and I’ll put them up at my Spreadshirt store at the cheapest price they will let me. Maybe we can put the total # of balls each person has snagged in the life on the back or something. I don’ know.

So, again…

* Buy your tickets to the May 18th A’s game vs the Royals NOW

* Email me at nickbatters@gmail.com once you have purchased your tickets, or if you are interested. I will keep 2 separate lists. Also send me an email if you have ANY questions. Feel free also to comment down below.

* Let me know if we should go the Oakland (1) or Dublin (2) route for pre-game activities.

* TELL EVERYONE. The more the merrier, so tell everyone you know!

Hopefully, this will be a fun event that will end up being MASSIVELY SUCCESSFUL!!! 🙂

20 Goals for 2013

In this New Year’s day entry, I will explain my 15 ballhawking, baseball, and blogging goals for 2013 is no particular order.

1) Snag 57 Baseballs combined between MLB and MILB: Why 57? Right now, I have snagged 15 MILB and 28 MLB baseballs, for a total of 43. Breaking 100 total baseballs would be huge for me.

2) Snag 7 game balls: In 2012, I snagged 3 foul balls, which for me was awesome. In 2013, I will focus more on game balls during games, rather than just watching the game, which I am looking forward to.

3) Don’t get shut out: In 2012, I got shut out 5 times. That is 5 times too many. If I can avoid getting shut out, I think the 2 above goals should come easier than if I do get shut out.

4) Snag at least one of each 2013 Commemorative ball: I don’t know which teams will use a ball with a special logo, but for those that do, I want to try to snag at least one of each.

5) Catch a home run: Plain and Simple. I want to snag a game home run at some point in 2013. Wether I am in the bleachers in Oakland or behind the fence in Modesto, it is important to me that I snag at least 1 game home run in 2013.

6) Average 3.5 Balls per game: In 2012, my average was 1.53 balls per game for MLB Games, and 2.5 balls per game for MILB Games. I want to increase both of those numbers in 2013!

7) Have a double-digit game: The most balls I have snagged in a game is 6. I’ve done that twice. Ideally, I would like to have at least one game in 2012 where I snag 10 or more balls. I would have to have a very successful BP, which I really haven’t had yet.

8) Attend 25 Games: In 2012, I went to 21 games, so I would like to increase that number in 2013. My family is getting a ticket plan with the A’s, so that should allow us to go to more games, since we are saving money with the plan.

9) Vist 10 Different MLB and MILB Stadiums: I will be honest, I don’t know how realistic this one is, but it is always good to set goals! This past year, I visited 3 MILB stadiums, and 2 MLB stadiums. I have a few different ideas for trips in my mind, so I still am keeping this goal in mind.

10) See 5 teams play that I have never seen play before: The only 2 AL Teams that I have not seen play are the White Sox and Astros, both teams that I want to watch at some point in 2013. I also plan on seeing a few new Minor League Teams play throughout 2013.

11) Have a hat for all 29 MLB Teams (I will NEVER buy or wear a Yankees hat, so they don’t count): Right now, I am 5 NL teams away from making this reality, so I would hope I can do this by the end of 2013.

12) Have a shirt for all 29 MLB Teams (Same thing as above- I will NEVER buy or wear a Yankees shirt, so they don’t count): I have a shirt for 19 different teams, so it would be nice for me to have shirts for every team before the end of 2013.

13) Collect 10 Different Giveaway Items: The A’s have a lot of fun giveaways scheduled, and Minor League Teams always keep it interesting, so this goal should be a lot of fun!

14) Get 30 Autographs: Whenever I have a chance for an autograph, I’ll take it, unless it means loosing out on a baseball. This past year, I managed 15 autographs on tickets and 1 on a hat, so I would love to increase that number in 2013!

15) Win the MyGameBalls.com Scavenger Hunt: This one will be hard. At MyGameBalls.com, since 2010, they have had a Photo Scavenger hunt, with a list of baseball photos to take, each photo being worth a certain amount of points. In 2010 and 2011, I did not participate. Todd Cook, along with his sons Tim and Kellan, won the contest both years. This past year, I chose to participate, and came in second place, to Cook and Sons. I feel that this could be my year, if I go to enough games and I always have a camera ready, I feel that I could potentially win in 2013!

16) Finish in the top 3 for the MyGameBalls.com Junior Ballhawk of the Year Award: In 2012, the top 5 finishers were: 1- Mateo Fischer (223 Balls); 2- Irish (106 Balls); 3- Cook and Sons (155 Balls; 4- Tom Mikita (0 Balls); 5- Paul K (39 Balls). Considering the fact that Mateo is no longer a “Junior Ballhawk,” I feel that if I am able to not get shut out as much as I did this past year, go to more games, snag more hit balls, and call out to players more, then I should have a very good shot with this goal.

17) Finish in the top 20 in the MLBlogs Latest Leaders: I have done really well these last few months, and the 2012 Top 100 should be out soon, but in 2013 I would love to break the top 20!

18) Get a Media Pass for a team: I won’t get into this too much, as I don’t want to hinder my chances, but ideally, I would like to get a Media Pass for at least one team in 2013, whether it is a Major or Minor League team.

19) Get all of my game entries up within 5 days of the game: In 2012, I kind of followed this, but not really. I want to focus on getting game entries up quickly and well done this year.

20) Meet many new people and have lots of unforeseen adventures and fun!: For me, the most important thing in all of this is having fun! I plan on spending many games out in Section 149 in Oakland, and I count on meeting many new people along the way.

Do you remember Paul K and Mateo fromyesterday’s entry? Well they wrote entries like this too! You can click here to read Mateo’s entry, and here to read Paul’s goal entry.

There you have it! My 2013 goals. On December 30th, 2013, I will follow up with a follow up entry to this one, looking back on these goals.

Do you have any ideas for goals for me? What are your goals? Let me know in the comments below!

Thanks for reading!

He writes the MLBlog called Observing Baseball, and even thought he was not one of the top commementers, he was one of my greatest supporters in 2012 with the growing popularity of this blog. He wrote a review entry as well, and you can check it out by clicking here. You can click here to follow him on Twitter or here to LIKE Observing Baseball.

I would also like to thank Zack Hample, Zachary Weiss, Wayne Peck, Todd Cook, Shawn Bosman, Rick Gold, Malcolm MacMillan, Paul K, and McCovey Cove Dave for all of their support this year. Click on any of their names above to give them a follow on Twitter.

*Zachary Weiss has also been one of the most supportive people, giving me advice and support with ballhawking as well as blogging.

*Wayne writes the MLBlogs Collection of Baseball and A View From the Bullpen, and I was fortunate enough to meet him this past October. He has encouraged me trough my ballhawking and been a great friend to me this past year.

*Todd Cook writes a fantastic blog, called Cook and Sons Baseball Adventures. He gave me constant competition with the myGameBalls.com Photo Scavenger Hunt, which I appreciate. He also wrote a book called the Baseball Log, which I own. I highly recommend that you go give it a look!

He listens to every broadcast, and is always ready to give me feedback. He writes the MLBLog called A Piece of The Game, and wrote an entry reviewing his 2012 season as well. Click here to check it out.

*McCovey Cove Dave has also supported me in my ballhawking and been a great friend to me on Twitter. I’ll be trying my best to spend a game out in McCovey Cove sometime in 2013.

Most imporatntly, I need to thank my Dad (Dan), my Mom (Anne), and my Sister (Pascale). Without these three people, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today. They are the ones who give me the support to continue my work at home. They are the ones that take me to the games, go to games with me, and allow me to ballhawk, even though I am not spending time with them. They are the reason that I am able to succeed, I cannot thank them enough.

From here, I will go over my entire year at 7000 Coliseum Way. I’ll share my month-by-month memories from blogging, to ballhawking, and mail!

I’ve gone back and read each post, and it amazes me how far my writing has come. In December of 2011, 1,000 words was a lot for me for one entry! Reaching July and August, some of my entries managed 3000 words!

In the month of January, I have a feeling a lot of you were not reading this blog. I had 75 views total in the month of January, that is an average of about 2 views each day.

On January 17th, I posted an entry about SOPA. I’ll be honest, I don’t know what I was thinking when I was writing that entry. If you want to check it out, you can right here.sopa12_hp

Shortly after that, on January 19th, I posted an entry with pictures of me, one at each of the 5 stadiums I had been to in my life. If you want to take a brief glance over that entry, it is here.pict2764

About a week later, on January 25th, I published an entry with LOTS of pictures that I had found from baseball games from 2005-2010, which you can read right here.
.img_5965

On January 27th, I published an entry about my expectations for the games I would go to in 2012, along with some information about A’s FanFest, an entry you can read here.649_hdr_fanfest

The following day, On January 28th, I posted a quick poll asking what A’s gear I should wear to FanFest, an entry that can be found here.

The very next day, on January 29th, my family and I were off to FanFest! We purchased some tickets, and had a complete blast! Check out that exciting entry here.

5 Months. 529 Views. 18 Posts.

In June, the views picked up again with 286. That averages about 10 views a day.

My first post of the month was on June 13th, where I talked a little about Matt Cain’s perfect game. I think more of me was just writing it because the A’s had just played one of the best games of their season, plus R.A. Dickey one-hit the Rays, and MLB Network was focusing on the Giants. Don’t get me wrong, a perfect game is amazing, I just wish that other stories had been covered that night as well. Check it out here.595x416_mattcain_nohitter_9apjsvx5_a07rcbnj

Then, on June 20th, I went to MUG Root Beer Float Day at the Coliseum with my mom and sister. The A’s were playing the Dodgers, who I wanted to see, as they were using commemorative balls. However, I was unable to snag a ball that night. That being said, it was still an awesome day. Read about it here.img_0049

The very next day, on June 21st, I set out with my dad and friend Ryan for another A’s and Dodgers game, with hopes of getting a commemorative ball. Derek Norris was making his MLB Debut in this game. Even though I was shut out for the second day in a row, the game ended with a bang! Check it out here.img_0194

Finally, 3 days later, on June 24th, I was back at the Coliseum again, for more interleague baseball, this time between the A’s and Giants. I got shut out for the 3rd game in a row, however I did snag something cool, and the game once again ended with a bang! Read it all again here.img_0217

That brings us to this entry. Entry #100 at 7000 Coliseum Way. It’s crazy to think how far I’ve come this year, with my blogging and ballhawking skills. In January, I never would have expected to be where I am today. I never would have thought I would have 27 envelopes stacked up in my bedroom from sports teams.

I NEVER in a million years would have expected to have the following that I do now. 43 Facebook Likes. 103 Twitter followers. 195 more Twitter followers. I want to again thank you all for your support with this blog, I could never do it without you.

AGAIN, Most imporatntly, I need to thank my Dad (Dan), my Mom (Anne), and my Sister (Pascale).

I think I have covered everything. If you think I have left something out, let me know in the comment section down below.

Thank You for having the patience to read this LONG entry, and stay tuned for many more entries in the new year.

2012 Season Stats

It’s frustrating that the A’s lost in the ALDS. It’s even more frustrating to see the Tigers whoop on the Yankees. Then, to see them get crushed by the Giants. Frustrating.

No, I didn’t go to Game 1 or 2 in San Francisco. Yes, I would have wanted to, even if I knew that I wash;t going to snag a ball, as long as I got to try.

That probably didn’t make sense… but away, I will not go to any more baseball games in 2012. I have a few things over the next few months that I will reveal as we get farther into the offseason.

Since the season is over, I’ve taken all of my stats, as listed on my MyGameballs.com pages, and posted them here for you all to see. I took screenshots from my pages and posted them below.

Major League Stats

There are two separate MyGameBalls.com sites. One for Major League ballhawking, and one for Minor League ballhawking. I have an account on each site. Above, I listed my MLB snagging stats. Below, I have listed my Minor League Snagging stats.

Minor League Stats:

Considering I snagged 5 balls in 2011, this was a great season. It was a fun season.

That’s it for this short entry. I’ll be posting various thing over the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more!

8/5/12 at the Oakland Coliseum

This was my 2nd game in the past 6 days. Let’s go!

We left the house at 8:40 for my dad to drop my mom and I off at BART. My sister had like a sleepover or something the night before, and she was going to come later with my dad.

My mom and I got to BART at about 9:00 and the Coliseum at about 10:30.

Once we exited the BART ramp, we headed towards Gate C, where I figured I would get in line. There was nobody in this line, or the 2 up at the BART ramp. (B and A were closed) Then, my mom reminded me that we needed to get tickets to another game, so we headed over to gate D to buy the tickets. I then remembered that the cast of Nitro Circus 3D was going to be greeting people at Gate D, so I jumped in line while my mom went ahead and purchased tickets for Scott Hatteberg bobblehead day.

Now, let me say right now, it will be hell for ballhwaking. Not only is there a bobblehead (With a sound chip) giveaway, but before the game, there is an on-field reunion 30 minutes before the game starts of the 2002 team that won 20 consecutive games. Then, after the game, if you pay an extra $12, you get to go on the field and watch the movie Moneyball on a huge screen above the center field fence.

I don’t expect to snag many if any at balls, but for me, this is such a great opportunity, that I can’t pass it up.

I was the only one is line

I started talking with this security guard at the gate

He thought I was about the coolest person ever. I talked about baseball, my blog, and stuff like that. He was kind enough to show me the schedule for the day, as I had told him that I snag baseballs. On it, it said that the A’s and Jays were supposed to take BP. If this was true, I was pumped!

He was under the impression that I was an All-Star baseball player. (Not close) This may have had something to do wit the fact that I had an 2 baseball glove, one being a catchers mitt. I also told him I am a 2nd baseman and short stop. That may have led him on to believe I was a leadoff hitter that will be drafted in the first round after high school. I guess his cousin was drafted 6th overall in the last NBA draft, which I think started the whole discussion. If you ever get in line at Gate D and see him, tell him Nicholas Badders sent you.

He ended up walking away when kids starting filing out of the coliseum from some class that A’s players were giving.

This lady was walking around, saying that Chevy was giving away free sun glasses. All you had to do was sign up for a chance to win a car. I sent my mom to investigate, and she ended up getting me some green A’s sunglasses.

Right after she got back, this pulled into the parking lot.

Nitro Circus! This is who got out…

If anybody can identify them for me, that would be great!

One of the things on the myGameBalls.com photo scavenger hunt involved getting a picture of you that had a celebrity in the shot. I complied this picture to submit that I hoped would be worth 6 points.

Those pictures were taken my dad. He arrived with my sister and joined us in line 15 minutes before the gates opened.

When the gates finally opened, I grabbed the giveaway of a Jemile Weeks drawstring backpack and headed to check if there was BP. The cages were up and the Blue Jays were on the field stretching! I ran up to the concourse, threw on my Blue Jays hat, and took off my A’s jersey to reveal my MLB Fan Cave shirt. I was running all over the place.

I ran down towards the Toronto dugout, where there were some players stretching. I called out for a ball, but had no luck. BP got under way, and knowing that the Jays don’t have a lot of lefty power, headed down behind their bullpen. I quickly got a toss-up from their bullpen catcher Alex Andreopoulos.

I am very glad that I didn’t go into the bleachers. There were 2. Yes, 2, balls hit into the bleachers in all of BP. They were both off the bat of Rajai Davis, the speedster that isn’t known at all for his power and jump-started his career with the A’s. The first one bounced into the bleachers from the steps between the foul pole and seats in LF, and the other was hit into the 2nd deck, bounced out, and into the bleachers. The same guy got both. Jose Bautista didn’t hit, and guys like Edwin Encarnacion hit balls out, but ones that didn’t go into the seats.

In total, I guess about 6 balls were hit clear over the wall by the Blue Jays.

There were a decent amount of other people with me down the right field line, and almost none of them had gloves.

This probably was the most I had ever moved around in BP. I was running up and down between the Jays’ dubout and bullpen the entire time. There were no balls that were hit foul into the seats, so I mostly followed balls that were weakly hit. There was one where I leaned over the railing, and even though the usher was holding my legs, I was unable to get it.

It also didn’t help that there were about 50 kids in a roped off area that were getting balls rolled, thrown, and hit to them. About 3 had gloves. Oh well.

It turns out, before BP had started, my dad took a bunch of pictures of A’s pitchers warming up. He also got a cool picture of Casey Chavez, the A’s bullpen catcher rubbing mud on the bullpen baseballs.

Lets start off with Sean Doolitle

Pedro Figueroa:

Casey Chavez (Again)

Travis Blackley (And his awesome glove)

He got some great shots of Blue Jays hitters during BP

The security guard’s sheet was wrong, but that was no big deal. The A’s didn’t hit, but the Blue Jays did. They did end pretty quickly, though. I would guess they hit for 25 minutes. Considering the fact that they had started at 11:15 and ended at 11:40, I was somewhat disappointed. I was also excited that this gave me time to get some more things of the scavenger hunt checklist.

The first picture that I checked off after the one before the gates opened was this hopefully 10-pointer. Todd, Tim, and Kellan Cook took a picutre of Tim sitting in the Orange seat at Camden Yards, holding up Todd’s phone with a picture of Cal Ripken Jr.

I took a photo imitating it. But, I was sitting in the seat, where David Ortiz’s 400th HR had landed.

Then, my dad decided to get this picture.

After this, we headed up to the 3rd deck, as I wanted to try out a cool new iPhone app I had found call 360. It is a 360 degree panoramic picture app. It free, and cool. If you have an IOS device, you should get it. I went to the last row and took this.

I also got this picture on my phone’s regular camera

Then, we headed to get another picture off the checklist. For 2 points, you need to get a picture with a statue in/at the stadium. Right by the Westside Club, I complied this picture

3 statues. From left to right, the 2008 Statue of Liberty All-Star Game A’s statue, the A’s giant piggy bank statue, and the 2010 Mickey Mouse All-Star Game A’s statue.

Then, we headed into the Westside Club, which I believe I have never mentioned before on this blog. It is basically a restaurant/bar in the Coliseum. They even have a custum sandwhich place called Deli 215.

From the Westside Club, we headed back to our seats. I there realized that we didn’t have aisle seat. Other than catching a foul ball, my goal for the game was to find an aisle seat a few rows up.

Shortly after I got back, I went with my sister to get an ice cream helmet, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

When we got back, I grabbed my glove and headed over to where Derek Norris was playing catch with bench coach Chip Hale

When Norris was done, I called out to him for a ball, but it turns out Chip Hale had all of them, and he tossed all 3 of the balls that he had to deserving little kids with gloves.

At this point, Tommy Milone was just about done playing catch with Casey Chavez, and was headed to warm up in the bullpen.

halfway through his warm up tosses, Stomper in his “Smiling Chevron Car” and his “herd” ran around the warm-up track with all of their “goodies.” They had the usual bead necklaces and Ryan Sweeney jerseys that were giveaways in 2010 or something like that.

I got a yellow necklace and gave it to a kid who was sad because he hadn’t gotten anything.

As the A’s relievers started to walk in from the clubhouse, everyone (Minus Pat Neshek) was signing for fans down the line. I got my ticket signed by Pedro Figueroa and then Jerry Blevins.

My family always seems disappointed when I sit by myself at games and go for balls, so at this game, I made a point to make sure to sit with my sister, who utterly hates me ballhawking. This my view for the game.

As usual, my dad got some amazing pictures. Like, really good pictures. As usual, I am going to share them with you.

Anthony Gose bunting in the top of the first inning

Coco Crisp fouling off a pitch

Josh Reddick at bat in the bottom of the first inning

Tom Milone pitching

Derek Norris at this dish

Brandon Inge rounding the base on Norris’s double

Coco Crisp swinging

Yoenis Cespedes swinging

Somebody on the Blue Jays hitting

Evan Scribner in the bullpen

Tom Milone releasing a pitch

Coco Crisp at the plate

Birds on the tarps on the 3rd deck

Rajai Davis swinging

Sean Doolittle in the bullpen

Pedro Figueroa warming in the bullpen

So I bet you are all wondering about foul balls during the game. There were 2 into the seats within 10 yards of me. There were 5 or so that the ball boy could have handed to me, but didn’t. So the two that landed in the seats… 1 bounced on the field and into the second row in the section to my left.

The other I should have caught. I am hitting myself over this. The ball was hit right at me. I lost it in the sky, but I eventually found it. It bounced softly 2 rows behind me and iI ran back and stuck my glove on the ball, which was in a cup holder. I held it there for a few seconds, then pulled it off. I grabbed it with my hand, but some lady yanked it out of my hand. Good going lady. An usher came over and asked if everyone was ok, so I told him that I was emotionally wounded. He chuckled and asked why. I explained. The lady offered the ball to me, but I told here to find a little kid to give it to.

I tried to stay happy, but I was just frustrated about the ball. I should have been able to hold onto it, but it left my hand. There isn’t anything I can do about it at this point.

Tommy Milone just wasn’t on his game, and allowed 6 runs over the course of his 6 innings. Going into the bottom of the 9th, the A’s had RBI doubles from Derek Norris and Coco Crisp, and a 3-run home run from Josh Reddick.

Norris stepped to the plate in the 9th, hoping to extend the game.

Just foul! By just a few feet too! He fouled off 2-3 pitches barely foul, eventually striking out. The A’s would lose 6-5. No Pie. No Kool and the Gang. But overall, it was a fun day!

Before we left, there was one more thing I wanted to do. I had seen a ball under the advertisement board by the bullpen, and something came to my mind. One more thing on the photo scavenger hunt list was to retrieve a ball from the field using items strictly from concession stands. I found a cardboard tray, and after a little modifying, tried to retrieve the ball. This is the photo I submitted.

And on our way out, I saw this sign, which the A’s took down the next day. I miss Kurt Suzuki. I hope he does well in our nation’s capitol.

How was Josh Reddick not an All-Star?

I’m back! I had a great time at camp, and I think that if I had to pick my favorite thing, it would be that they would read the baseball scores every morning! Pretty awesome! The A’s lost on Saturday, the day I left and they won Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. I got back on Saturday. For every full day I spent at camp, the A’s won. Other than no baseball games, what would this mean if I worked on staff there next summer?

While I was gone, the A’s had 2 walk-off hits, They outscored their opponents 21-14 and evened out their record to be at an even .500.

I’m glad to be back, and just in time for the All-Star celebration. I was more than surprised to find that Ryan Cook was the A’s only all-star. I mean, Josh Reddick had an insane 1st half! He had 20 home runs with 43 RBIs! And I was not the only one surprised by this. Not only was he ticked, but so were Ryan Cook and the rest of the Athletics organization. I, personally thought Reddick deserved to go more than Cook, but Cook still deserved to go as well.

Lets start off with the home run derby. I have to say, at the beginning, my pick to win was Jose Bautista, but I wanted Andrew McCutchen to win. He was the one guy who everyone didn’t expect to win. Of course he had only one home run, but he is still my favorite Pirates player.

I wasn’t surprised by the Royals fans booing Robinson Cano for not putting Billy Butler on the team, and of course Cano didn’t hit any home runs, but I would like to point out that he was the only AL player not to make it to the 2nd round. One guy that some of you might know, the guy known as Ballhawk Shawn, was lucky enough to snag a Prince Fielder home run in the 2nd round of the derby. It was Prince’s 8th home run of the night, and he eventually won the whole thing. My pick to click in Jose Bautista finished 2nd in the derby, just a few home runs shy of Prince.

Now onto the All-Star Game. Every minute up to the introductions, I was honestly hoping that someone had been injured on the AL squad and Reddick had been chosen to replace him. That, unfortunately was not the case. As mean as this may seem, I really, really wanted to see him play in the All Star game. Its not that I wanted someone to get seriously hurt, I am very disappointed that Reddick was most selected. After a performance from Phillip Phillips, it was time for the introductions. It was great to see Bob Melvin and Cook representing the A’s, as much as I would liked to have more people there in the Green and Gold. The first inning for me, was very frustrating to say the least. 5 runs off of Justin Verlander… crazy!

Not to mention, Pablo Sandoval had a 3-run triple, Matt Cain started and pitched the first two innings, and Melky Cabrera went 2-2 with a 2-run home run to take home MVP honors. Great. More crap from my friends that are Giants fans.

It was great to see Ryan Cook come in in the 7th inning, and see the NL go 1-2-3, including David Wright and Bryce Harper and his gold shoes. The AL did loose for the 3rd time in a row, this time 8-0.

I would like to point out here, that Ron Washington lost to the Giants in the World Series. He just lost to the Giants in the All-Star game.

One final thing that I would like to say is that I expect Kurt Suzuki to be traded this month. Derek Norris has taken his job. I don’t care what anyone else says. Suzuki is having a season to forget and is slowly turning into Jason Kendall. Ugh. I will miss Zuk, but I am looking forward to having a big bat like Derek’s in the A’s lineup.

Now I really can’t wait for baseball to start back up again tomorrow. I need it. Now if you follow me on Twitter, or have liked this blog, then you know that I have a lot of possibilities regarding baseball games in the future. I hope to go to a game this weekend, and maintain a pace of 1 or more games per week, parent permitting. I will do my best to be at myGameballs.com BallhallkFest 2012 West Coast.

Other than that, I have no real commitments. I wish I did. Trust me.

5/11/12 at the Oakland Coliseum

My family left for the 7:05 game, with the gates opening at 5:35 around 4: 30ish. My original goal was to be there at 4:30, but then 4:45. We arrived at the Coliseum around 5:00.

The night before, I sent a DM on Twitter to Rick Gold, the #5 ballhawk on the mygameballs.com lifetime leaderboard. I asked if I could take a picture with him before the game and get to talk to him for a little.

After we got there, we got in line and my sister and I played a little catch. Then, I walked over to the team store, and on the way back to my family, Rick called me over. I got to talking to him about everything from his job with mlb.com, to ballhawking and other things. He said that he had free tickets from mlb.com and he actually game an extra one to me! Thanks Rick! When it was 5:30, the line was all the way to the unopened right field gate and back to the 1B gate, which is where I wanted to enter the Coliseum. I headed back to get in line with my parents, and within 5 minutes, we were inside with our awesome Swingin’ A’s blankets. After talking to Rick, I knew that I should avoid the LF bleachers altogether and headed to the RF bleachers.

The first hitting group was made up of Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Delmon Young, who are the 3-5 hitters in the Tigers lineup.

The LF bleachers were packed, just like Rick said, because of Cabrera and Young. Fielder was the only lefty in the group and while I was there, he hit only 1 home run. I had no luck with the first group. Or the second group. In the 3rd group, Brennan Boesch hit 5 or so balls right below the out-of-town scoreboard, and some unknown Tigers player tossed me my first ball of the day.

Before BP ended, I wanted to check something off the mygameballs.com scavenger hunt list. Ballhawking in a Justin Bieber shirt. Well before I had left my house, I made a Justin Bieber shirt, so I wore it under my brand new Yoenis Cespedes jersey. My dad took this picture right after BP ended.

After getting a picture with my only ball from BP, we headed up to our seats in the 3rd deck. As I said in my previous entry, we were sitting in the Value Deck for the Comcast SportsNet California Authentic Fan Friday.

While in the 3rd deck, I checked off another item on the Scavenger Hunt list, take a picture with a blue tongue. (There are a lot of things that make your tounge blue)

We checked it out, and the view was just flat-out incredible. I went to the last view and took a picture.

To my left

To my right

Yes, there are only 3 sections open in the 3rd deck. The A’s closed it off around 2005 or something like that because the Coliseum was rarely half full with it all open, so they tarped it all off. A few years ago, they opened 3 sections back up, and it hands-down has the best view in the Coliseum.

After all of this, I headed down to section 222, with the ticket that Rick had kindly given me. I slipped into my seat just in time for the first pitch. I headed back to the upper deck in the bottom of the 3rd inning. I wasn’t thinking and left while Josh Reddick was up. On the very first pitch he saw while I was out of my seat, he hit it a section to my left… at least Rick got it!

But in this game, A’s starter Tommy Milone, who I got to meet at A’s FanFest, was on par. He only allowed 2 runs over 7 strong innings.

While in the 3rd deck, I got in line for this wheel thing, which has different prizes on it. Well I got there just in time, because at a certain point, they only had backpacks left, and just handed them out to the people in line. My sister and I were lucky enough to get one. Kara, the A’s in-game host also came up to do a half-inning game, with some kids.

I stayed up there until the end of the 5th or 6th inning, and then headed back down. That was when I found out that Rick was the one who had gotten the Reddick foul ball. No more balls came close to us for the rest of the game, so eventually; I headed back up to watch the rest of the game with my family. My sister was very upset about me not spending more time with her. Just like the last game. It was a great experience for all of us for sure. And best of all, the A’s won!

At the end of the game, my dad got a picture of me with Iall of the things that I got at this game. In clockwise order: The A’s trucker hat given away to all fans in the 3rd deck, the Swingin A’s fleece blanket, the CSN bag, and my one and only ball of the day.

Now, the picture of me in the Bieber shirt, the Blue Tongue, and the picture with Rick, this is how the mygameballs.com scavenger hunt standings looked the next day.

1st place baby!

My next scheduled MLB game is June 20th at the Coliseum. The A’s are taking on the Dodgers, and it is MUG Root Beer float day, so that should be a lot of fun! I will try to stick in some minor league action as well as some unexpected games until then. It will be hard to not go to any baseball games for over a month!

BALLHAWKING STATS:

• 1 ball at this game
• 4 balls in 3 Major League games this season = 1.33 ball per game.
• 5 ball in 4 baseball games this season = 1.25 balls per game.
