6/26/13 at the Oakland Coliseum

Today was root beer float day! My mom, sister, and I attended Root Beer Float day last year, and we were at it again this year!

We decided to get to the Coliseum around 8:30am. The gates were to open at 10:35 am, with a 12:35 pm start time.

We caught the 8am BART train, getting to the Coliseum just before 8:30. We were the first ones in line. For the next hour, there was not much going on. We saw the root beer being delivered to the Eastside Club, just like last year.

IMG_8901

We were in line at MM, however we were not going to be sitting in the RF Bleachers. We would be in Section 127 for this game.

Everyone had all of their stuff in a pile before the gates opened.

IMG_8904

The bag check was all ready to go.

IMG_8905

And the Root Beer Float mug stand was set up.

IMG_8907

Last year, I rushed through Root Beer float day, because I wanted to get out and ballhawk, so this time, I was planning on soaking up Root Beer Float day, then ballhawking if time allowed.

As soon the gates opened, I ran in and purchased my mug, then walked into the Eastside club.

IMG_8909

There were LOADS of tables and booths set up, with celebrities from all over the Bay Area serving root beer floats.

The A’s players’ wives and girlfriends had their own table.

IMG_8921

It got packed quickly!

IMG_8922

My first stop was the Comcast SportsNet table. There, I got to talk with Casey Pratt and Kate Longworth, from CSN. As I enjoyed my float, I headed over to the table, where this sign was located.

IMG_8923

I got a Yoga Mat last year at this event, I have no need for a kids club kid, and I was at the game that the Scott Hatteberg bobblehead was given away. I picked up a Jason Giambi bobblehead, along with 2 Roy Steele bobbleheads. Roy Steele was the A’s PA announcer for over 30 years.

Within half an hour, the area was PACKED!

IMG_8924

Remember how I had mentioned a table with the A’s players and wives? My next float was served by Angie Balfour, wife of Grant Balfour. EXTREMELY nice lady!

It all just got more and more crowded.
IMG_8925

At this point, I decided to try and get a panoramic picture from the Plaza Reserved seats. As soon as I took a look, I saw that the cage was set up. Not only that, but the Reds were on the field stretching!

I let my mom know where I was going, and I headed off to the RF foul line.
IMG_8931

Curtis Partch was just wrapping up playing catch when I got there. I called out to him, and I had ball #1 on the day!

20130729-121404.jpg

The Reds started to hit, and they were hitting A LOT of balls down the RF line. Curtis Partch was fielding them all and throwing EVERY SINGLE ONE into the crowd. I would say at least 20 balls were hit to him. Every single ball hit to him, he would toss up. However, we recognized me, so I wasn’t able to get another toss-up from him.

About 10 minutes before BP ended, he jogged in. Aroldis Chapman started patrolling the RF corner, where he didn’t throw a single ball into the crowd.

Then, 5 minutes later, he jogged in as well. The last group of hitter was pulling a lot of balls down the RF line, with nobody to get them. As BP wrapped up, 5 or so balls were sitting on the warning track, in front of the foul pole. Mark, the security guard by the visiting bullpen, walked over. He picked up all of the balls, tossing each into the crowd. I was lucky enough to come up with one of them.

20130729-121421.jpg

I then handed it to a kid next to me who hadn’t been lucky enough to get one.

I wandered around a bit before heading back to my seat, joining my sister and mom.

Players slowly began to come out onto the field to stretch.

IMG_8938

IMG_8939

IMG_8941

A.J. Griffin finished up his warm-up tosses in the bullpen.

IMG_8947

And we were ready to go! The ballboy down the LF line always warms up the A’s left fielder, which I think would be an awesome job.

IMG_8948

Like I mentioned, A.J. Griffin was the A’s starter in this game.

IMG_8952

This was the view from my seat.

IMG_8957

It was weird, as it always has been this year, to see the RF bleachers from a different perspective.

IMG_8964

IMG_8966

Yoenis Cespedes made a few adjustments to his cup throughout the game.

IMG_8968

Before the gates had opened, I had been tweeting back with Ryan Dalton, who you might remember from a few of my entries. He said he would be out in LF for the game, and sure enough, there he was.
IMG_8977

I’m not sure about the guy behind him in the picture. No clue…

After 6 1/2 innings, the A’s were leading the Reds 4-0, with the Reds only having 2 hits off of A.J. Griffin. Tony Cingrani came in to relieve Homer Bailey in the bottom of the 7th.

IMG_8980

In case you are wondering… the A’s 4 runs came on a Brandon Moss double and Josh Donaldson home run in the 4th inning.

I spent a lot of time taking random photos like these…

IMG_8982

IMG_8984

IMG_8986

IMG_8988

Cingrani struggled a bit, allowing a double to Eric Sogard, then a pinch-hit double to Nate Freiman.

IMG_8990

The A’s took the field in the 8th with a 5-0 lead.

IMG_8994

Grant Balfour was warming up Yoenis this inning.

IMG_8995

Everyone was going nuts every time Cespedes threw the warmup ball into the crowd.

IMG_8996

In the 8th inning, Griffin was only at 90 pitches after 1 out.

IMG_8997

He finished the day with a complete-game, two-hit shutout, on 108 pitches.

Great day! Root Beer Float Day was great as usual! I was surprised with Reds BP. I snagged 2 balls. The A’s won. You Can NOT complain! I was going to be back out at the yard just a few days later for Coco Lean bobblehead day!

BALLHAWKING STATS:

  • 2 Balls at this Game

6/25/13 at the Oakland Coliseum

This was the first of a two-game series between the A’s and Reds. It would also be my first of 3 games in 5 days.

It was a 7:05 game, with the gates opening at 5:35. My dad and I arrived around 4:15 where we got in line at gate MM. At the time, were the only fans in line.

It was pretty boring for the next hour. It was pretty cold and it was raining off and on. Nobody was in line behind us for about 45 minutes. 30 minutes before the gates opened, Will MacNeil got in line with us.

5 minutes before the gates opened, the line looked like this…

IMG_7136

Yeah. I could tell it would feel pretty empty for the game. The gates opened at 5:35, where my dad and I grabbed two front row seats in Section 149, on the aisle.  It was pretty empty.

IMG_7140

Things were looking up, as the Reds have a lot of power in their lineup. With few fans, lots of balls being hit into the outfield, I was confident that BP would be a lot of fun!

IMG_7142

Boy oh boy was I wrong…  It felt like the Reds hitters were trained to hit the ball to opposite field during BP. When the first few groups were up, I was going to RF for lefties, then LF for righties. Once I realized what was going on, I adjusted, going to RF for righties, LF for lefties.  Nobody was hitting anything near where I was positioning myself.

IMG_7157

There were a lot of people in the outfield. LOTS of pitchers were standing in the right-centerfield area, but none of them were tossing anything up. It was awful.

IMG_7152

Johnny Cueto was manning the Right Field warning track.

IMG_7227

He wasn’t tossing anything up either.

IMG_7230

Things were turning from bad to worse.  I had no clue what to expect from here on out.

IMG_7247

Over by the A’s dugout, Kate Longworth was getting ready for the A’s pregame show.

IMG_7401

Cueto was signing autographs by the Reds bullpen.

IMG_7436

And for the most part, the Reds hitters were making great contact with the ball. They just were not hitting it anywhere near me.

IMG_7457

I was positioning myself wherever I thought I had the best chance of snagging a ball. The Reds just kept hitting it where I least expected it. I tried to adjust, but things just didn’t work out.

IMG_7206 To add to my frustration, none of the pitchers were tossing anything up. It was one of those situations where I wished I was a little kid or young female.

IMG_7490

And before I knew it, Batting Practice was over. Just like that. Wow.

IMG_7501

I was in utter shock. Everything went wrong. I got there early, the stadium was very empty, things looked great. All of a sudden, things turned for the worst. Nobody was tossing anything up,  plus the Reds hitters were not hitting balls into either bleachers section. I would say at most, 5 balls landed in the bleachers over the course of BP.

I really don’t know exactly how to put it all into words…

This was the last game all season I expected to get shutout at.  It was all hard to swallow. At least there was a great game ahead!

Batting Practice ended around 6:20, so I had time to go grab food. As I was walking through the concourse, I bumped into Vanessa Demske and Wes Mills, among a few other people (If you have read almost any of my Coliseum posts, you know who they are). We all grabbed some food and headed back to the bleachers. Stephen Vogt was already well into warming up for his A’s debut.

IMG_7507

Tommy Milone, the A’s starter was also warming up.

IMG_7516 Bronson Arroyo, the Reds starting pitcher came out to warm up as well.

IMG_7561 He started to play long toss with Ryan Hanigan.

IMG_7545 Tommy Milone was playing catch as well with Stephen Vogt.

IMG_7569

IMG_7578

The grounds crew was putting the final touches on the field.

IMG_7576

Most Reds players went into their last stretches.

IMG_7592

IMG_7602

 Same with the A’s.

IMG_7618

Right before the first pitch, the A’s had a ceremony honoring a few people. I can’t remember exactly what they were being honored for…

IMG_7683

To the game…

Pat Neshek is hands down my favorite player to take photos of, due to his funky delivery. Coming in a close second is Bronson Arroyo. The leg kick says it all.

IMG_7976

In the bottom of the 2nd, after a Brandon Moss double and Josh Donaldson single, Josh Reddick laced a line drive to center field that was fielded by Shin-Soo Choo.

IMG_8000

Reddick stood at 2n with a double, starting the scoring off to make it 2-0.

IMG_8004

Everyone was excited!

IMG_8006

Stephen Vogt then followed up with a Sac fly, driving in Donaldson, advancing Reddick to 3rd.

IMG_8019

Everyone in Right Field was into the game, as expected!
IMG_8225

In the A’s half of the 3rd, Yoenis Cespedes started the scoring off in the inning by driving in Coco Crisp, advancing Jed Lowrie to 3rd base.

IMG_8243

Brandon Moss brought in Lowrie with a Sac Fly, making the score 4-0 A’s.

Josh Donaldson then stepped to the plate and on the first pitch of the at bat, made contact with the ball.

IMG_8275

He BOMBED it out to left field!

IMG_8277

This made the score 6-0 A’s after 3 innings.

Joey Votto led off the 4th with a homer, brining Todd Frazier to the plate.

He singled to left field, but got greedy, trying to stretch it into a double. Yoenis threw the ball into Eric Sogard at 2nd Base, who threw it to Brandon Moss at 1st, to Jed Lowrie, who was covering 2nd, to make it a 7-4-3-6 putout.IMG_8359

Jerry Blevins came on in the 6th inning, relieving Tommy Milone

IMG_8667

He loaded the bases after hitting Shin-Soo Choo, but managed to get out of the 6th inning unharmed.

IMG_8656

In the top of the 8th, Sean Doolittle came on to replace Ryan Cook, who had pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning. What did that mean? It was time for some Doolittle headbanging!

IMG_8768

I looked over to 148, where Wes and Vanessa were headbanging it out!

IMG_8782

In the bottom of the 8th inning, Vanessa came over from 148 to join my dad and I in 149. She had something pretty cool to show us…

This was the box she handed me.

IMG_8818 That would be a Coco Lean bobblehead! It was the giveaway for the game 4 days later! From what I understand, Vanessa won an essay contest for the blog Big League Stew, where the prize was that bobblehead! She was taking it on “tour,” where her goal was to get as many people to take a picture with it as possible. My reaction pretty much sums it up.

IMG_8827

I admired the leaning bobblehead a bit.

IMG_8829 Actually, bobble-torso, or bobble-waist would be more appropriate.

IMG_8835

Anyway…

Jay Bruce was at the plate with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, with the A’s ahead 7-3.

IMG_8846

Dan Ortero was on the mound to finish the game off.

IMG_8850

And it was an A’s win! The stadium cleared out rather quickly.

IMG_8864

But the bleachers were not emptying yet. There was a group of Irish soccer fans who were visiting the US and had decided to visit an A’s game. They were sitting and cheering their heads off in Section 148. It was awesome to see! Well they got a group picture, along with Wes, who is pretty much one of the Kings of 148.

IMG_8887

Everyone was happy about the A’s victory!

IMG_8891

Vanessa got this picture with Yuichiro, holding up “Sogard Specs”

IMG_8895

And we all celebrated in the concourse, as the lights and ushers kicked us out of the bleachers, because apparently, they want to get home or something like that.

 IMG_8896

 It was a good game!

Sure I didn’t snag a ball, but it was a great day. I was ready to be back out at the yard the next day, for the last game of the two game series between the A’s and Reds.

BALLHAWKING STATS:

I think more of me was just writing it because the A’s had just played one of the best games of their season, plus R.A. Dickey one-hit the Rays, and MLB Network was focusing on the Giants. Don’t get me wrong, a perfect game is amazing, I just wish that other stories had been covered that night as well. Check it out here.595x416_mattcain_nohitter_9apjsvx5_a07rcbnj

Then, on June 20th, I went to MUG Root Beer Float Day at the Coliseum with my mom and sister. The A’s were playing the Dodgers, who I wanted to see, as they were using commemorative balls. However, I was unable to snag a ball that night. That being said, it was still an awesome day. Read about it here.img_0049

The very next day, on June 21st, I set out with my dad and friend Ryan for another A’s and Dodgers game, with hopes of getting a commemorative ball. Derek Norris was making his MLB Debut in this game. Even though I was shut out for the second day in a row, the game ended with a bang! Check it out here.img_0194

Finally, 3 days later, on June 24th, I was back at the Coliseum again, for more interleague baseball, this time between the A’s and Giants. I got shut out for the 3rd game in a row, however I did snag something cool, and the game once again ended with a bang! Read it all again here.img_0217

That brings us to this entry. Entry #100 at 7000 Coliseum Way. It’s crazy to think how far I’ve come this year, with my blogging and ballhawking skills. In January, I never would have expected to be where I am today. I never would have thought I would have 27 envelopes stacked up in my bedroom from sports teams.

I NEVER in a million years would have expected to have the following that I do now. 43 Facebook Likes. 103 Twitter followers. 195 more Twitter followers. I want to again thank you all for your support with this blog, I could never do it without you.

AGAIN, Most imporatntly, I need to thank my Dad (Dan), my Mom (Anne), and my Sister (Pascale). Without these three people, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today. They are the ones who give me the support to continue my work at home. They are the ones that take me to the games, go to games with me, and allow me to ballhawk, even though I am not spending time with them. They are the reason that I am able to succeed, I cannot thank them enough.

I think I have covered everything. If you think I have left something out, let me know in the comment section down below.

Thank You for having the patience to read this LONG entry, and stay tuned for many more entries in the new year.

Even More Mail!

On Friday, as I mentioned in my last entry, when I got home, I found another fan pack waiting for me. On Saturday, I got two more fan packs in the mail, from the Reds and Red Sox.

The first one was courtesy of the Houston Astros.

Old logo. Yikes! The envelope was very thin, so I knew things were not looking good.

The first thing I found inside was a 2012 pocket schedule.

2012… ok then… The next item was a sticker with their *OLD* logo

The last item was a oversized player card with the *OLD* logo, featuring JA Happ.

This fan pack makes the Indians look amazing.

Chances are, I will be sending them another email during baseball season, perhaps in hopes of stuff with the new logo.

On Saturday, like I mentioned earlier, I received two envelopes in the mail. I decided to open the bigger one first. It was from the Reds

I first pulled out a letter from the Reds

Followed by a Jay Bruce RedsFest baseball card

After that, I found a Reds decal that says “Go Reds!” and has an alternate logo

I then found two Reds Stickers

The next thing I pulled out was two envelopes wrapped in a Reds rally towel

How cool is that?

Here is the first envelope

I opened it up to find this

Really neat!

There was also David Concepcion envelope

With a print inside

I would have to say in my opinion, the Reds have sent the best stuff so far!

The next envelope I had was from the Boston Red Sox

I first pulled out a letter

Followed by a Red Sox socks logo sticker

And Fenway Park 100 Years logo sticker

I then found a Franklin Morales signed photo

The next item I pulled out was a red wristband that says Red Sox Nation on the side

The final item I pulled out was the coolest

Fenway Park dirt (Technically clay)

As I write this, my mom is telling me to write the fact that she is very jealous. She grew up in the Boston area going to Red Sox games with her dad. I have a strange feeling she may be sending an email of her own to the Red Sox…

So, I have gotten some pretty cool stuff so far!

Here is another updated list of team replies:

3) Red Sox

6) Indians
